Bohemian Style Personality

How to Dress with Texture, Story, and Creative Freedom — No Matter Your Season

Bohemian Style on a Sunlit Soft Autumn.

The Bohemian or Artistic Style Personality is a celebration of individuality, creativity, and freedom. It blends cultural influences, layered textures, and eclectic pieces into a look that feels expressive, earthy, and relaxed.

They do not really follow fashion rules—they like to create their own.

This style often combines vintage finds, natural fabrics, and handcrafted details to create outfits that feel like an extension of your spirit.

It’s earthy, romantic, and sometimes a little wild—but with intention.

And like all style personalities, it’s not dictated by your color season. Whether you’re Deep Winter or Light Spring you can wear Bohemian silhouettes and textures—it’s all about how you combine them.

Note: There’s a lot of overlap between Bohemian and Artistic style personalities: they both love creativity, texture, and self-expression.

Some might define Boho as more earthy and Artistic as more eclectic, but I've grouped them together because the feeling they create is similar: unique, expressive, and never cookie-cutter. I've always thought of this look as "style with a soul."

Key Style Traits of the Bohemian/Artistic Look

This style is defined by layering, mix-and-match textures, and a sense of storytelling. There’s always something interesting happening—visually, emotionally, or both.

🧵 Fabrics:

  • Flowy cotton, gauze, crepe, velvet
  • Embroidered linens and raw silks
  • Crocheted knits, macramé
  • Denim, corduroy, suede
  • Handwoven or artisan-style textures

🪡 Shapes & Details:

  • Kimono sleeves, maxi skirts, bell sleeves
  • Tunics, vests, fringe, flared pants
  • Embroidery, beading, patchwork
  • Peasant tops, wide-leg pants, wrap styles
  • Mixed prints or tonal layering
  • Raw hems, tassels, artisan detail

🪶 Design Approach:

  • Vintage or globally inspired
  • Lots of texture: rough + soft, matte + shiny
  • Flowing silhouettes with grounded footwear
  • Often layered with scarves, belts, or hats
  • Slightly oversized, never tightly fitted

Bohemian and Creative Style Across the Seasons

Every season can wear this style—it’s just about doing it in your best palette.

  • A Cool Summer Bohemian might layer misty lavender and denim with embroidered linen.
  • A Warm Autumn Bohemian could wear cinnamon, moss, and rust with suede boots and vintage jewelry.
  • A Clear Spring Bohemian might mix turquoise and coral with a floaty cream tunic and gold accents.
  • A Deep Winter Bohemian could wear deep plum, navy, and black with a vintage print scarf and strong boots.

Who Typically Loves This Style?

The Bohemian/Artistic Personality Style draws in people who:

  • Love layered, expressive, or vintage looks
  • Are creative, intuitive, or drawn to soulful aesthetics
  • Find inspiration in nature, art, music, or travel
  • Prefer comfort, movement, and personal meaning in clothing
  • Want to feel connected to their clothes, not just styled by them

Along with the Dramatic Style, the Boho style is one of the most individualized of all the style types—no two Boho wardrobes are alike.

Celebrities with Bohemian Artistic Styles

A few celebrity examples that I feel embody this style most of the time (though I wish some of them would wear their right colors more often ;) include:

  • Stevie Nicks
  • Helena Bonham Carter
  • The Olsen Twins
  • Steven Tyler (yes, Steven Tyler ;)

Hairstyles That Fit the Bohemian / Artistic Style

Bohemian style is effortlessly artistic, earthy, and free-spirited. Hair is rarely stiff or over-styled—it moves with the breeze and often carries a lived-in, dreamy quality. It’s not about perfection; it’s about expression.

Boho types tend to prefer:

  • Loose, flowing hair—whether long waves, natural curls, or messy buns
  • Braids of all kinds—fishtails, crown braids, side braids, or tiny accent braids worked into down styles
  • Undone texture—hair that looks like you just left the beach or a music festival
  • Long layers that create movement and soften the face
  • Natural or sun-kissed color—rich browns, warm blondes, or auburns that feel rooted in nature
  • Occasional pops of flair—a streak of pastel, tiny charms, or beaded strands for the artist at heart

Hair accessories are playful and earthy—think leather headbands, scarves, flower clips, beaded pins, or even small feathers woven in. Bohemian hair should feel like it tells a story—one that’s creative, grounded, and full of personality.

Accessories That Fit the Bohemian Look

  • Leather crossbodies, slouchy totes, or embroidered bags
  • Long pendants, chunky rings, stacked bangles
  • Scarves worn as belts or headwraps
  • Wide-brimmed hats or soft fedoras
  • Suede ankle boots, moccasins, lace-up sandals
  • Ethnic-inspired or artisan jewelry

Accessories often carry meaning or memory—they aren’t just add-ons, they’re artifacts.

Final Thought: Bohemian Style is Soul-Driven, Not Trend-Driven

The Bohemian Style Personality is about you. Your taste, your textures, your stories.

You might find your favorite piece in a boutique in Barcelona… or at a flea market in your hometown. You might wear a jacket you’ve owned for 20 years with a dress you bought last week. It’s all part of your personal expression.

True story: I have a little purse that has a cool picture of Elvis on it. I had bought it for my Mom many years ago. And after she died, I took it and put it into my accessories for times when I want to remember my Mom. And I am an Elvis fan, too, but not like my Mom. She was in love with him.

Anyway, I wore it once to some sort of 'image consultant' gathering years ago, and it was conveyed to me very subtly but clearly from a woman who thought the purse was "tacky" and unbecoming for an 'image consultant'.

This is one of the negative things about image consulting I hate most: the snobbishness you sometimes find in the industry.

My view on image management, like projecting a certain style and knowing your best colors, is that it is a tool- a powerful tool. You can use it wisely to your advantage, to project a certain image to the rest of the world that literally judges you within seconds of seeing you. But you are in control.

If you want to wear a sentimental item like a cool Elvis purse or anything else someone might think is tacky, I say wear it with pride, no matter what your style is🌹
